Community Kids is a weekly parent and toddler group, each Thursday at Abergavenny Community Centre. We spoke to Freddy Edmonds, who runs the group along with other volunteers, and some regulars, about the group and what makes it different from others.

‘Starting at 10.30, we meet in a lovely room (in a former class room) at the Centre. There are soft mats out for the babies to roll on, chairs for the mums, dads, grandparents and carers, and a selection of play equipment, ranging from wooden ovens to ride on toys for the toddlers. Each week we offer a different creative activity for the children and at snack time, they love the toast and marmite and fruit. When it’s fine, the children go outside where there is a sand pit and water tray, and beautiful plants to explore. The session ends with song time, which the children love. This group is as much for the adults as it is the toddlers, where they can meet new people and make friends.’

SandpitThis is what some of the parents and carers at the group told us:

‘For me, it’s the social aspect – meeting other Mums and having a short break, where the children can play with other children. It’s a really relaxed and friendly group and there are different things to do each week.’

‘I’ve been coming since the group started. It is such a lovely group – one of my favourites. Everyone is so friendly, supportive and caring. It feels very safe. The volunteers who run it really seem to really care about the children. They understand toddlers and give them the freedom they want.’

‘This group has been excellent for my grand daughter. She was very quiet and shy to start with but she is settled now and happily joins in. The helpers are really friendly and it’s nice to go outside when it’s sunny.’

‘There is such a lovely atmosphere here. I think the children enjoy the structure. The children seem very happy. It’s a good mix of ages. I really appreciate the volunteers, who give up their time to run it. The car park is very useful for me too.’

Community Kids would like to thank The Rotary Club for a recent donation.
