When the Agincourt600 commemorations were mentioned at a meeting last year, there were many present who knew little of the battle and even less of the link our community had to this part of history.
The Agincourt600 group have organised many events, one of these is the excellent exhibition that Bryan Davies has collated. When the villages of Trecastle and Llywel became aware that there was an opportunity for us to host the touring exhibition, the Friends of St Davids Church, decided we have an ideal venue, and for the opening weekend we would stage a flower festival.
The Archers’ Journey is our festival theme and this gives us the opportunity to depict the route taken by local Archers as they mustered, ready to go to battle. As you enter the church your journey will start at Carmarthen, then you will visit the communities of Llandovery, Trecastle, Sennybridge and Brecon, gathering Archers at each location, then onward to the muster point at Tretower.
From here we move through Abergavenny, Raglan, then up to Gloucester to cross the estuary and on to Southampton for the sea crossing to France. Finally to the Agincourt Battle field, where we pause and contemplate the battle scene.
Each location will be represented by a floral display arranged by local groups such as YFC, Ladies Guild, Sennybridge School, St Teilos church, the Community Council and local individuals. We thank local businesses who have offered sponsorship, providing us with a flower fund which will ensure that our visitors will be treated to a wealth of floral vitality.
Events like ours give the opportunity to chat with friends, old and new, over a cup of tea and a piece of cake, and at St David’s we are blessed with the ideal location, our old Sunday school building set in the churchyard which will become our tearoom for the weekend.
The flower festival weekend and the Agincourt600 exhibition, allow us not just to be the appreciative host but gives us the opportunity to raise awareness of the amazing historical building and its many heritage artefacts which we are privileged to call our Church.
