The Longest Yarn is a group of volunteer knitters and crocheters based all over the UK and abroad who have worked together to produce 2 exhibitions depicting life during WWII out of wool. Details of the exhibitions can be found at:www.thelongestyarn.com.
The first exhibition is currently being displayed in Saint-Hillaire-Petitville, France near to the D-Day landing sites after a tour of the UK, Ireland and the U.S. and it has 80 different scenes capturing moments from days of the Battle of Normandy. The second exhibition which is titled “Britain at War” has 80 different scenes and 8 life size mannequins telling the story of how people coped with the onset of WWII and the way they adapted to a new way of life during this period, and this exhibition is coming to Abergavenny in May 2027. It has been displayed in Cathedrals, Abbeys, Churches and Village halls alike with thousands of visitors attending weekly. This will be a free entry to the exhibition with voluntary donations gratefully received. All surplus funds will be shared between St Mary’s Priory Church and the Longest Yarn who are currently helping to refurbish a narrowboat for homeless Veterans.
“We have been working hard to secure a place on the tour of the UK” said Wendy Wilson of the Abergavenny Yarnies Group and we’re pleased to announce that St Mary’s Priory Church Abergavenny have kindly agreed to host the display next year. To prepare for its arrival, funds will need to be raised to cover transport costs, insurance and advertising, several local sponsors have been approached to help raise funds to make this happen and anyone who would like to sponsor this exhibition please contact Mrs Beverley Smith or email her on: beverley-janesmith@btinternet.com
