Monmouthshire County Council is introducing temporary traffic measures at Gilwern Viaduct after recent checks identified some structural concerns. These steps are being put in place to keep everyone safe and to protect the long-term future of the bridge.

From Monday 19 January, and until further notice, the following changes will apply:
- A 3-tonne weight limit will be in place
- Traffic will be reduced to one lane, controlled by temporary traffic lights
- Pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge
These precautionary measures will help reduce strain on the viaduct while specialist engineers work with the Council to develop both short- and long-term solutions. The bridge and traffic arrangements will be closely monitored throughout this period.
At this stage, there is no confirmed end date, and the restrictions are expected to remain in place for some time.
Councillor Catrin Maby, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and the Environment, said:
“We know this may be inconvenient for local residents and road users, but these temporary measures are essential to keep the bridge safe while we work towards a lasting solution. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding.”
