An exclusive talk by therapist and behaviour consultant NICKY HUTCHINSON. Wednesday 22 February, 7pm, Abergavenny Community Centre.

While there are positives, you will also have heard many reports talking about the negative effects of social media. The NSPCC recently said that social media is helping fuel a nation of “deeply unhappy” children, as it published new figures showing a rise in the practice of self harming. At Abergavenny Community Centre, we feel this needs addressing, and one of the ways we are doing this is through hosting this exclusive talk.

“Technology is now a big part of all our lives and this is especially true for our children. They can seem so familiar with the online world that we can find it hard to keep up with their knowledge of computer games, online apps and social networking.

Being online gives them wonderful opportunities and is often a great way for them to socialise, explore and have fun. But they do face risks like cyberbullying or seeing content that’s inappropriate. Whether you are familiar with new technology or still feel unsure about it, this session will help you think about your children’s use of mobiles, game consoles and computers and consider what you can do at home to keep them safe.” Nicky Hutchinson.

Nicky was originally a teacher and is now a therapist and behavioural consultant. She works nationally with schools, universities, child professionals and parents on children’s body image and other aspects of children’s behaviour, emotional health and well-being. Nicky passionately believes in promoting children’s body confidence and self esteem. She’s aware of the many issues that affect children’s mental health and has a particular interest in how we can build their resilience to the pressures of our modern society.

She advises the government and children’s body image and has has written two books ‘Body Image in the Primary School’ about children’s body image and self esteem and ‘Intervening Early’ about young children’s behaviour.

This event is in association with the Wise Women’s Group. It is free but donations are welcome.
