Abergavenny Light Opera Company is alive and well again.

It is one of the oldest companies in the town but had hit hard times some years ago when its then current committee decided to disband the society. This came as a shock to many of the members, some of which were determined not to let things go – so, about a year and a half ago, four of the old members started meeting together on a weekly basis with the intention of reviving the society.

It was a long hard struggle as for quite some time it was only the four of them plus the MD that they had asked to come along to help. Eventually, a couple who had been involved with other societies, heard about the group and started coming along. They brought in friends, some of whom had also had experience with other societies, many who had little or no experience of these kind of shows.

It was decided that rather than try to put on a full scale show that we would stage a one night   review centring around the theme of the commemoration of the wars featuring many of the good old songs that folk would remember. It was held at the Borough Theatre and was great success.

Following on the group hosted the carol concert on behalf of the Park Street Community Centre where we rehearse. It was a fantastic night which resulted in a couple more men wanting to join the society.

It was then clear that the next step for us was a full show. The Railway Children, based on the wonderful book by E. Nesbit was decided upon. The music is fantastic, the story is great and it could be performed by a relatively small cast. We advertised for the children’s parts, auditioned them and now have nine young stars! Rehearsals are underway ready for the show 4th-7th October in the Borough Theatre. However, if you’re quick, there’s still chance to get in and join us. We are a very friendly group and meet on Wednesdays at the Park Street Community Centre.

Please come and see the show and welcome us back.
