At the Abergavenny Community Centre: Saturday 22nd August
If you have little ones to entertain over the summer, finding activities to do with them can be a challenge. There’s nothing better than getting them moving about to burn off some excess energy. Abergavenny World Dance is holding a Family Song & Dance Workshop on 22nd August – a great way to have fun, get some exercise and make new friends!
Abergavenny World Dance is putting together a selection of fun song, dance & craft workshops for accompanied children, from 4 – 11 years in the summer holidays, on Saturday 22nd August at the new Community Centre, formerly Park Street School.
The children will have the opportunity to learn Welsh songs and dances as well as dances from other countries plus folk and Disney songs too. In addition, the craft workshop will involve making a communal piece of art that we can keep and use for future community events. We will all add our own bit to a long banner, which will eventually stand 5m high and will illustrate what we love and value about our community.
Abergavenny World Dance, a local community dance group, enabling mainly adults to learn dances from around the world with the help of experienced teachers and live music from their World Dance Band. The youngest member, Ruby, was only 6 years old when she started, is now a very able dancer and has inspired Hilary to start these workshops specially for children 4-11 years.
Hilary would like the children to find out what a feel-good fun time they can have dancing, singing and making things, without a computer game, mobile phone or ipad in sight! The children with their parents, grandparents or other adults will have the opportunity to enjoy activities together that provide physical exercise, use their brains and are very sociable. As Dr Dance, Peter Lovatt, tells us is the best combination.
The children will be divided into infants and junior age groups and the content of the workshops will be age-appropriate. The venue is the main hall in the new Abergavenny Community Centre, which has a wonderful wooden floor, ideal for dancing. While one group is dancing or singing, the other group will be designing the Giant Banner.
The children will have the opportunity to see musicians playing a variety of instruments for the dancing and singing, which will include a concertina, guitar, bass, percussion and autoharp and join in sometimes.
All the adults helping with this event are experienced in their fields of music, teaching, dancing, singing, Welsh language and craft. They are giving their time and expertise freely for the benefit of the community.
The event is non-profit making and is being subsidized by Abergavenny World Dance. Places, £3 per child, are limited so please reserve your child’s place by emailing or texting Hilary Jay on jays.music@mac.com or 07515 351 813
Every child will be provided with drinks (water/milk, fresh fruit and biscuit plus craft materials) Do let Hilary know if your child has special dietary or other needs.
Family song & Dance Workshops take place from 9.00 – 12.30 pm, Saturday 22nd August at Abergavenny Community Centre with facilities for an optional bring/share picnic lunch outside afterward and a chance to see the hens!
