2015 marks the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt. For the people of Brecon, Tretower, Trecastle and Monmouthshire it’s a particularly special occasion. Local heroes – including the famous Welsh longbowmen – distinguished themselves in this crucial 15th-century battle.
A special events programme has been organised by community groups across Brecon, Tretower, Trecastle and Monmouthshire, which will include re-enactments, jousts, pageants, parades, children’s activities, medieval games and much more. These events will take place throughout the year in the build-up to the battle’s anniversary on 25th October.
A touring exhibition dedicated to the role Brecknock and Monmouthshire played in the success of the Battle of Agincourt 1415, has been launched at Theatr Brycheiniog gallery by Professor Anne Curry, a world authority on Agincourt and Chair of the national committee commemorating its 600th anniversary in 2015. The exhibition will be at its Brecon location until 11th April before it goes on tour until February 2016, arriving at Abergavenny Museum on 18th April until 11th June.
Other events and initiatives already planned include Family events each weekend in June in Monmouthshire. On 6th June there will be a medieval fayre at Abergavenny Castle. The Bowmen of Gwent will appear on 6th and also afternoon of 7th. There will be Blacksmiths, stonemasons, archers and archery and more. An evening medieval-style hog roast with mead will be served in the Tithe Barn, and there will be a Pilgrimage walk from Abergavenny Castle to St Mary’s Priory Centre.
Later in the year, a commemorative service will take place at St Mary’s Priory Church, Abergavenny on 25th October. For more information about the ongoing programme of special events, visit the Agincourt 600 website: www.agincourt600wales.com. Here you will also find comprehensive information about the battle and its Welsh links.
Community groups have been working closely with funders to make the commemoration happen. These include Brecon Beacons National Park, Brecon Town Council, Monmouthshire County Council, Powys County Council, Rural Alliances and the Welsh Government.
