Arts Alive Wales, in collaboration with Gwent Arts in Health (GARTH), have commissioned Brecon-based artist Tessa Waite to realise her design for the light and airy atrium working with members of the community.

The new artwork, Aerial will be unveiled in November 2014 at Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny in the Outpatients Hall.  Her installation uses hoops encircling the hall’s pillars to hang objects, made by the project’s participants, to create a sparkling chandelier of movement, colour and light. Coloured gels on the atrium windows will add a glow of colour.

Aerial will replace another popular and much-loved Arts Alive Wales project Dreamscape, installed back in the summer of 2008. Garth Arts Development Manager Sarah Goodey, who works year round to enhance the hospital environment, comments Aerial will re-invigorate the waiting area with light, movement, sparkle and shadow, yet the colours – white, gold, silver and bronze – are light and simple. It’s going to look amazing.”

Thanks to funding from the Arts Council of Wales, over 200 people will contribute to the final artwork by creating elements of the installation. Kathy Young, who works as Arts Alive Wales Community Projects Manager, is coordinating participation.  “There are a wide range of groups taking part including young homeless people, women’s craft groups, Young Carers, and adults and children with mental health issues. A team of volunteers will help assemble Aerial in October for its November installation.”

Arts Alive Wales runs classes, projects and events that enable people, particularly those with least access, to take part in high quality artist led activities that offer opportunities for both creative expression and improved wellbeing.
