holiday-dogBooking a holiday is an exciting time – we decide on a location and then set about booking the time off work. The next thing to do is sit back and count down the days/weeks/months until the departure date arrives. Right?

If you happen to be a pet owner, sorting out ‘Merlin’s’ or ‘Fatcat’s’ needs before you jet away can be both problematic and stressful. Taking your pet away on holiday is not generally a viable option, and if you don’t have family or friends who are willing or able to take on the responsibility of caring for your pet whilst you’re away, what should you do?

Our friends at Contented Pets provide Home Boarding for Dogs and care for cats that stay in their own homes. They’ve given us some invaluable, professional advice in terms of what you should be looking for when considering holiday care for your pet.

DOGS

Home Boarders should be licenced by the local council, fully insured and be known by your local vet.

It is important to meet the person your dog is going to stay with and for you to see the environment where your pet is going to stay before the holiday date arrives. Contented Pets meet all dogs before they begin their actual stay. Once they have met you and your pet and all parties are happy, the doggie vacation can be booked in.

Your dog should be fully vaccinated.

Ensure your Home Boarding provider can give your dog plenty of exercise and have access to a secure garden/outside space. Contented Pets ensure that their canine boarders get at least 3 walks a day, every day.

Many Home Boarding services will not accept dogs under 6 months, or those that haven’t been toilet trained, so it is important to be aware of any rules before booking your own holiday.

CATS

It’s usually more convenient and more suitable for a cat to remain at home. Look for a service where somebody will go in at least twice a day or more often if needed.

Your service provider should empty litter trays and replenish food and water as well as giving your feline companion plenty of cuddles, strokes and a brush if required.

Contented Pets go one step further…by opening and closing curtains, moving the post, watering plants, taking in parcels and putting out the rubbish, you can relax in the knowledge that someone is also keeping an eye on your home once you are away. Bonus!
