Chief Inspector Jo Bull of Gwent Police gives us a round-up of policing in the Abergavenny area over the past year.

As we start a fresh new year, I wanted to take the time to let you know what focus we have been putting locally on crime in Abergavenny and the surrounding areas. In Abergavenny alone, we have seen a reduction in crime of 6.3%. This actually means that within this area of Monmouthshire, we have seen 140 less victims of crime since April 2012, when compared to the same period last year. We have seen particular reductions in criminal damage, shoplifting and violence offences, and we are also continuing to focus on burglary offences.

This is really positive and I can reassure you that my officers are working hard to continue to reduce crime and the impact of crime within your communities. This year we have given real emphasis to pursuing those persistent offenders who negatively affect all of our lives. Our determination has ensured that several of our key offenders are now in prison.

I want our communities to feel safe whilst going about their daily business or leisure activities and we have increased our visibility to help reassure local communities. You will have noticed that the Mobile Police Station is active within you area for example, and we have increased our patrols within the town centre.

We also hold regular police surgeries throughout Abergavenny. These are publicised throughout the local area, in the local papers, on our social media sites as well as on our website (www.gwent.police.uk). Please just drop into one of these surgeries if you’d like to speak to your local team about anything.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year.
