Focus Magazines The local magazines for Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Brecon & Talgarth – Events, News and Advertising
When thinking about how to make children aware of how to behave responsibly during Halloween and Bonfire Night, the Abergavenny Neighbourhood Policing Team thought the best way to do this was to get the children involved themselves with the design work!

Abergavenny Neighbourhood Sergeants Jon Williams and Ceri Carlyon approached local schools in the area to see if their pupils could design a poster with some crime prevention messages for our approaching campaigns.

Ysgol Gymraeg Y Fenni have worked on the Halloween and Bonfire Night campaign and other schools will be involved in future campaigns such as Christmas, anti-social behaviour and road safety.

The Juniors from Ysgol Gymraeg Y Fenni worked on Halloween and with the key message based around the ‘No Callers Please’ pumpkins distributed and designed by Gwent Police to encourage children to move on and not disturb people displaying the pumpkin poster during the evening.

The Infants worked on Bonfire night and included messages such as firework safety, anti-social behaviour and keeping pets indoors.

A winner was picked from each group by Monmouthshire Chief Inspector Jo Bull for their eye catching messages and design.

The winner from the Juniors was Holly Thomas aged 10 and the winner from the Infants was Mari Jones aged 5. The winning posters will be displayed around Abergavenny for all local residents to see.

Holly and Mari will also get the chance to become ‘Police Deputies’ for the day and will visit Abergavenny Police Station for a tour as well as going out in the police car.
Police Sergeant Jon Williams explained, ‘All of the posters designed were of a really high quality and we were really impressed especially due to the fact that the children were all under 11!

‘We’d like to thank Ysgol Gymraeg Y Fenni for being involved in our campaign and we hope members of the public see these posters and take on board the messages they portray.’
