Sir George Everest was born here at The Manor hotel in 1790. His pioneering mapping work as Surveyor General of India, led him to the Himalayas, and the highest peak in the world was named after him in 1865 – Mount Everest.

Situated in possibly the most beautiful valley in the Brecon Beacons National Park on the fringes of the pretty and sophisticated market town of Crickhowell, the views from The Manor hotel are inspiring. Maybe Everest’s childhood among these Welsh mountains naturally led him to his career in the Himalayas?

It is known that Everest travelled to the foothills of the Himalayas as part of his work, but there is no firm evidence that he ever saw, let alone climbed, the summit of the mountain which bears his name. However, the theories developed by Everest were used in 1852 to locate the summit and it was officially re-named Mount Everest in his honour.

October is surprisingly one of the two best months (May is the other) to attempt the summit and also marks the end of the climbing season on Mount Everest. Meanwhile here in Wales, October also heralds the start of Autumn in the Brecon Beacons, arguably one of the most beautiful times of the year with its magical colours and crisp sunny days.

The Manor, now a family owned hotel and bistro, is in a perfect position to showcase the stunning views and hues of Autumn, as it sits at the foot of Table Mountain and looks over the valley and River Usk. Its location is very special, what could be more relaxing than having afternoon tea, a coffee, lunch or dinner gazing out across this breathtaking landscape.

It has undergone many transformations over time, but has been completely renovated in recent years, retaining all its original features and charm while establishing itself as a warm and friendly place to relax, eat and sleep.

Owned by small family-run company of local chefs, called TasteInnWales, great food lies at the heart of The Manor, which has won many awards and gained a well deserved reputation. The chefs at the Manor’s Everest Bistro create fresh, tasty, seasonal food using local ingredients – 80% of the meat and poultry comes directly from the family farm just seven miles down the road.

The Everest Bistro menus feature quintessentially classic British dishes while showcasing the best Welsh flavours from the area. The chefs believe in simple, unfussy food and try to use local, organic, seasonal produce. Their special ‘Seven Mile Dine’ lunch menu offers two courses including a glass of wine for just £12.00 or 3 courses for £14.00.

The Manor uniquely offers leisure, gym and pool facilities, which have proved very popular among the local community – it has the only indoor heated swimming pool and leisure facilities in the area, with sauna, a gym, Jacuzzi, and steam room. Everyone is welcome to drop by for a swim, join a class, get energetic in the gym or just relax in the bar over lunch.
