The Abergavenny Neighbourhood Team has created a new Youth Liaison Team made up of Community Support Officers Chris Chaloner, Jo Powell and Erin Folan.
The team are all part of the Neighbourhood Policing Team but will be key points of contact for young people living in the Abergavenny area. The officers will patrol areas that young people visit on a weekly basis such as the Skate Park, youth centre and local schools and will be available to talk about any concerns young people have.
The team want to work with young people to overcome any issues and will be holding youth panels during the Autumn so that young people can raise issues with the aim of developing relationships with the police.
With the run up to Halloween and Bonfire night, anti-social behaviour historically has caused a problem for areas of Abergavenny and the team will be working hard to make sure no youth related anti-social behaviour takes place.
Activities are planned for youngsters by the Youth Service for the Halloween and Bonfire night period and officers will be working closely with them to make sure all events go without problem.
The team have also launched a competition in Ysgol Gymraeg Y Fenni to involve the pupils in a poster campaign. Pupils are designing the posters to encourage the community to stay safe and act responsibly when trick or treating and when using fireworks. The competition closes in October so look out for the winning designs in Abergavenny around Halloween and Bonfire night!
Abergavenny Neighbourhood Sergeant Ceri Carlyon explained, ‘We don’t want to portray young people as the enemy, we just want to help them feel like they can trust us and talk to us if they need to.
‘All of the Youth Liaison Team are fairly young so can understand the pressures and issues young people have to face and by working together, we can hopefully combat any problems.’
