Unfortunately the rainy weather hasn’t deterred thieves this summer and Monmouthshire officers are urging residents to check their shed and garage security to make sure they don’t get targeted.
Throughout May and June, 31 garages and sheds in Abergavenny have been broken into with Mardy, Cantref and Llanfoist being the worst affected areas.
Detective Inspector Lyn Hawker explained,
‘The main problem appears to be residents leaving their sheds and garages unlocked. Expensive power tools and farming equipment, gardening tools and bikes appear to be the main target for thieves. We’re appealing for residents to remain vigilant in their local area and report anything suspicious. If you see anyone acting unusually or if you see any suspicious vehicles, please call 101 immediately to report it.’
There are a few simple steps that you can take to protect your possessions;
- Check your shed is in good condition and thieves cannot gain entry simply by removing boards from its sides or rear.
- Fit a good lock and always use the lock and secure your shed when you are not using it.
- Fit an alarm. Shed alarms are relatively inexpensive, easy to install and can be battery operated or mains powered.
- Postcode and mark all property such as ladders, lawn mowers, hedge trimmers and garden furniture. This can be done using an ultraviolet marker, engraving, stamping or paint.
- Register your property on www.immobilise.com.
- Photograph valuable property including the identifying marks, making it easier to identify them if they are ever stolen.
- Ladders, bikes and larger objects should always be stored away in a shed or garage after use. If they have to be stored outside they should be secured with a chain or lock and hidden from view wherever possible.
