King Henry VIII’s School Old Boys have installed a new President; John Henry Davies.
After leaving school in 1962 John attended the Monmouthshire Institute of Agriculture Usk where he gained both National and College Agricultural Qualifications. He returned home to the family farm joining his father becoming a partner in 1969. John found time to be a Board Member of the Abergavenny and Borders Counties Show until it folded.
John was a keen supporter of the Young Farmers Movement being a member of the Abergavenny Club, where he took part in and was a very successful and valued member of the Public Speaking team. Using the knowledge he gained “on the farm” to good effect he was very successful as a Stock Judge competing at club, county, and all Wales Level, going on to international success at the Royal Smithfield Show where he won one of the highest awards for stock judging. He continued his ties with the YFC as President of Crucorney Young Farmers Club for a number of years. Not content with his years in the YFC he continued his off the farm agricultural interest as Chairman of the Pandy and Monnowside Ploughing Society.
John the sportsman took part in all aspects of sport at school including playing rugby but never for the school “first fifteen.” Yet on leaving school he played for Abergavenny first fifteen for four seasons before going on to play for Pontypool RFC. During the five seasons where he was part a major part of the “Poolers” they won the Welsh Championship on no less than two occasions. He is an avid supporter of all aspects of sport and continues his sporting prowess playing golf as often as he is able; he has played in the KHS OBA Golf day on many occasions.
John the family man is married with two sons and a doting grandfather to four grandchildren.
