“The competitions are open to anyone” says Colin Beynon, secondary school co-ordinator. “We welcome entries from all over Monmouthshire, Newport and surrounding counties, and we’ve had youngsters competing from as far away as Aberystwyth. It’s a very friendly event, and successful competitors can walk away with a fair amount of prize money at the end of the day, which is an added incentive!”

Visitors are welcome to attend these preliminary competitions, which often include performers of a very high standard who don’t quite make it to the stage in the evening. Competitions include instrumental solo, vocal solo for under 25s, Welsh solo, song from a Musical; the vocal duet, trio or quartet and Champion solo (with prize money of £250) which is open to all comers, except under 25s.

Entry forms are available in Abergavenny library, Abergavenny Music and a number of other outlets, and entries can also be made via the website – www.abergavennyeisteddfod.co.uk
