Conversations at the Chapel – Raymond Williams with Professor Dai Smith Upstairs at the Chapel Thursday 14th May 2026, 8pm

In conversation with Dr Peter Wakelin.

Historian, teacher, broadcaster, novelist and poet Professor Dai Smith, former Chair of the Arts Council of Wales, will discuss his life and career with a particular focus on his acclaimed biography of the writer, critic and academic Raymond Williams. The continuing influence of Raymond Williams as a thinker is global but Abergavenny was his home town and his novels Border Country and People of the Black Mountains were among many expressions of his strong connection with the area throughout his life.

Peter Wakelin chairs the Board of Cadw and is President of the Contemporary Art Society for Wales. His books include Hidden Histories: Discovering the Heritage of Wales, Hill-rhythms: David Jones + Capel-y-ffinRefuge and Renewal: Migration and British Art and several artist monographs.
