The 40 strong Alive and Kickin’ Community Choir Brecon was set up and is led by Tanya Walker, a trained natural voice practitioner with over 35 years experience in music.
Tanya is also an award winning singer/ songwriter, composer and performer having performed her Arts Council funded musical work ‘Breaking the Fearwall’ at the Barclaycard arena at Hay Festival 2012.
The Alive and Kickin’ Choir is a choir for everyone! No experience necessary as the choir is about having fun singing as a group and is is led with the ethos that everyone has a right to sing, no matter how they sound.
Sessions include body and voice warm ups, to help participants feel completely relaxed, remove anxieties and find their ‘natural voices’. Participants learn wonderful material with beautiful harmonies comprised of acapella songs from around the world and piano accompanied material that Tanya writes for the choir. Songs are easy to pick up and are taught by ear.
Choir members leave sessions feeling uplifted and happy, so it is also very beneficial for overall feelings of happiness and health and well-being!
The choir practise on a Monday evening from 7 – 9 pm at the Old Museum, Glamorgan St, Brecon. Sessions currently cost £5.00 per session. All ages from 10 years upwards welcome.
The choir has performed on numerous occasions but it is not essential that everyone who joins the choir has to perform, so don’t let this put you off!
Performances to date have included the Brecon Fringe Festival and Brecon Womens Arts Festival.The choir have also performed flash mob performances at Morrisons and at a wedding in Felin Fach.
This year the choir are looking forward to performing on Sunday 10th August at 1 pm at The Clarence Hotel in Brecon and at 2.30 pm outside St Marys Church in Brecon both as part of the Brecon Fringe Festival 2014. On October 1st they will be joining the Boyan Ensemble of Kiev for a song as as part of a performance at Theatr Brycheiniog.
