Help support local independent businesses and have a chance of winning £600
‘Celebrate an Independent Christmas’ is a nationwide campaign to improve and boost sales for our local high street businesses and to support our local community and economy. 2012 is the first year that the campaign is being run, and a large number of Abergavenny retailers have become involved, with the support of The Best of Abergavenny, who have worked hard in launching the campaign for our town, and The Abergavenny Business Club, as well as other organisations.
To participate in this initiative, and for your chance to win £600 or one of four runner-up prizes, the idea is simple:
- Pick up a shopping map from any of the 28 shops participating shops.
- Visit each place on the map
- Leave your completed map at any of the 28 shops
- The completed maps will be entered into a prize draw and the lucky winner will be announced in early January.
Any Questions..?
Q. How do I prove that I visited each place on the map?
A. The retailer will stamp your map to show that you have visited.
Q. Christmas is an expensive time for me and I can’t afford to shop in 28 shops.
A. It is not a rule that you have to actually buy something! You just call in to say hi, and the retailer will be happy to see that you’re playing the game.
Q. 28 shops is a lot to visit, how am I supposed to find the time?
A. The game goes on for a month – you do not have to visit all the shops in one day.
Q. I’ve never heard of some of the places on the list – how do I find them?
A. Exactly! The game is about finding the new and unknown places in a very familiar town. Addresses, opening times and gift ideas are all provided on Facebook: (http://www.facebook.com/events/472008339516776/) and the maps themselves have the addresses on too.
Q. Why is there so much fuss about supporting independent businesses anyway?
A. For every £1 you spend in a local, independent business, between 50p – 70p circulates back into your local economy. Shopping locally supports local traders, their suppliers and the people that depend on them to run their business. Buying locally boosts your local economy, rebuilding confidence in the community and enabling the local businesses to prosper and grow.
When you shop with your local independents, you are doing ‘your bit’ to keep your local high street, town or village ‘open for businesses.‘
