Between 2nd and 6th October, Ian Wadell will take on a 100 mile walk from Castle Carreg Cennen on the edge of the Black Mountain, to Abergavenny’s Angel Hotel, in order to raise money for BLESMA.
Over the past three decades, Ian has managed to raise an impressive £200,000 for various charities, most of which are linked to the Armed Forces. His planned solo walk in October, with an ascent of over 20,000ft crossing severe terrain, will raise money for the British Limbless Ex-Serviceman’s Association – BLESMA. Due to present conflicts, the support of BLESMA is in great demand, with many wounded having lost two or three limbs. There are many more surviving these terrible injuries thanks to vast improvements in medical healthcare on the battlefield and the fact that those who are injured can be returned to the UK within 24 hours. Many of the injured are cared for at Headley Court, with long-term patients located in BLESMA residential homes in Blackpool and Crief.
Ian’s challenge, which he calls ‘a stroll,’ (which is anything but), will require essential map reading and compass skills. While his walk is a solo challenge, he will have support at road crossings and, on occasions, hopes that some may be willing to walk with him.
Now, at the age of 75 (coincidentally the same age as BLESMA itself), Ian accepts that this may be the last of his multi-day challenges and wryly observes that his body may not pass another MOT. In any case we are certain that he will be successful with his upcoming challenge and wish Ian all the very best!
