Street Life Sarnies is a charitable community group that was set up by Claire and Bart Day with the aim of providing and distributing sandwich packs to the homeless. The group supports hostels, refuges, walkabout teams and soup kitchens by acquiring resources and distributing them. As well as serving South Wales, Street Life Sarnies (SLS) reach as far afield as Bristol.
The group works hard all year round, raising money to buy tents, sleeping bags, socks etc. The group is made up entirely of volunteers who do not take anything out of the charity for expenses or fuel costs, ensuring every penny goes to SLS.
Earlier this year, founder Claire was recognised for her work, being nominated as a finalist for a Pride of Britain Award.
Now in its fourth year, SLS is once again seeking support for its Christmas shoebox appeal. Each year as part of the appeal, the group collects shoeboxes that are packed with supplies such as toothbrushes, chocolate, and woolly gloves and hats.
The boxes are then distributed to homeless charities. Last year SLS gave out over 1500 shoeboxes to the homeless – rough sleepers, people or families in refuges or hostels. People also generously donated brand new toys for children and selection boxes.
If you’d like to donate a shoebox, please see the information below about what to include. The closing date is 8th December, so there is still time to donate.
Drop off points are Halifax in Abergavenny or Market Hall Cinema in Brynmawr. There is no specific drop off point for the Crickhowell and Brecon area, however, volunteer Kate Oakes who works in Crickhowell will be happy to arrange collection for those wishing to donate. To contact Kate, please email kate.oakes@btinternet.com or phone 01495310946 and leave a message so she can contact you.
