Dyfed Powys Police are reminding those using their caravans across the force area this summer to keep their property secure at all times in order to minimise the risks of becoming the victims of criminals.
Thieves will often target caravans for spare parts or to sell on elsewhere and will also target valuables left inside them. Caravans are more difficult to secure than your home or car but there are measures you can take to help deter thieves.

“First and foremost, people using their caravans this summer should consider ways of storing valuables out of sight, so they’re not on display to any criminals,” said Sergeant Adele Pitt.

Here are a few other handy tips caravaners can follow to ensure they don’t become a target for potential thieves.

Most new, modern mobile homes come equipped with the kind of window and door locks that you will find on residential properties, but these can only be effective if they are used

Install intruder alarms these have proven to be an effective deterrent to scare off offenders

Choose your site with care and give some consideration to the security features it offers as well as its facilities.

If possible, look for sites that display the ‘Secure by Design’ logo, indicating that the site meets with stringent security standards and that measures such as closed circuit TV and private security patrols have been implemented.

Consider the use of intelligent property marking systems such as Smartwater DNA which can link your holiday home to your main domestic residence.
Immobilise your caravan even when you stop only briefly.
