Cymraeg i Blant/Cymraeg for Kids is an all Wales Welsh Government scheme focusing on increasing the numbers of Welsh-speaking children.
The scheme’s main objective is to increase the number of Welsh-speaking children by providing prospective parents and families with advice, information and support on the benefits of introducing the Welsh language as early as possible and choosing Welsh medium education for their children. The sooner the child hears Welsh, the better!
Cymraeg i Blant Officers hold a number of free support groups for parents, which include: Baby Massage, Baby Yoga, Welsh Story and Rhyme time, Sing Sign and Story sessions and family fun days on a local level.
Following the massive success of the 2016 National Eisteddfod of Wales held in Abergavenny, and the continuing success of the Welsh medium primary school Ysgol Gymraeg Y Fenni, there has been a growing interest in the Abergavenny area in the Welsh language. This has been reflected in the popularity of our Cymraeg i Blant groups in the town!
The group welcomes fluent Welsh speakers, learners and non Welsh-speaking parents.
Gemma Taylor, a parent who attends the sessions in Abergavenny with her baby Carys, and has learned Welsh in the past says , “we are all thoroughly enjoying learning baby massage and using Welsh…such a relaxed atmosphere and no pressure to use Welsh but lots of language used repetitively, so easy to pick up if you don’t use the language”.
For some parents, who have not spoken Welsh since school, such as Angharad Carrington-Edmunds who attends the groups with her baby Evelyn, the groups can help them to regain confidence using the Welsh language, “mae’r grwp llawn hwyl a sbri ac yn helpu i fi i gael hyder i siarad Cymraeg”.
