Focus Magazines The local magazines for Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Brecon & Talgarth – Events, News and Advertising

Members of Gilwern U3A attending November’s monthly meeting came away feeling as if they had been living life in the slow lane compared to that of the speaker, Lynne Allbutt.

Starting her working life as a jobbing gardener, Lynne now works as a journalist, film producer, bee keeper and author, with barefoot walking across the width of Wales and dry stone walling thrown in – and she’s still a radio and TV gardener! A fascinating talk from a fascinating lady.

The November meeting also showcased work done by members of the Art Group, with many beautiful and varied paintings and drawings exhibited. For details of the Art Group’s timetable visit www.gilwernu3a.org.uk.

And the Theatre-goer’s Group spent a delightful evening in Brecon watching The Nutcracker as performed by the Russian State Ballet – a real treat. Visits to The Borough Theatre are booked up to the New Year and new members are always welcomed.

The Gardening Group is having a seasonal break “until the snowdrops are out” according to their information, and the Beginner’s Bridge Group is up and running, with 10 members of varying levels enjoying their initial introductory sessions before settling down to a regular day-time slot. The Family History Group goes from strength to strength having free access to the Library resources and meets at the Community Centre the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 10.15am. And lastly, The Walking Group got out and about, reaching their highest point yet at the Blorenge Punchbowl.

The December meeting promises to be a party with a Quiz, music and singing, plus mince pies to follow, so come along and join in the fun.

All monthly meetings of Gilwern U3A are held in the Community Centre, Common Road, Gilwern and start at 2pm. It is possible to join Gilwern U3A on the day, with annual subscriptions being halved to £7.50 for anyone joining between September 2017 and March 2018. The benefits of belonging to Gilwern U3A are open to all retired, semi-retired persons and those no longer looking after families.
