Following the August break, the September monthly meeting of Gilwern U3A was something of a milestone as this ‘young’ branch was presented with a Certificate celebrating its membership of the Third Age Trust. Chair Hilary LIpscombe received the certificate from Lloyd Evans and it joins one presented to Grahame Nelmes on him being Gilwern’s first representative at the U3A National Conference in Nottingham.
And what a fun meeting September was with laughter and chatter as Don Balkwill presented “Grandma’s Gadgets” to the audience. Many baffling items were shown but few guessed their real purpose, and those that did, didn’t want others to know that they remembered them!
How different the October meeting will be on Wednesday 18th October when David Mitchell (not the one off the TV) presents his talk about Machiavelli. Was he really as bad and evil as his reputation suggests or was he just a clever politician? We will all know more after David’s talk.
And then another total change of topic for Wednesday 15th November when Lynne Allbutt, the well-known horticultural columnist and TV presenter, talks about “My Own Garden Path”. Her topics promise to range from gardening through to bee keeping and writing books – certainly one not to miss.
All monthly meetings of Gilwern U3A are held in the Community Centre, Common Road, Gilwern and start at 2pm. It is possible to join Gilwern U3A on the day, with annual subscriptions being halved to £7.50 for anyone joining between September 2017 and March 2018. The benefits of belonging to Gilwern U3A are open to all retired, semi-retired persons and those no longer looking after families. Non-members are are always welcomed to the monthly meetings and will be charged £2 per head
