Focus Magazines The local magazines for Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Brecon & Talgarth – Events, News and Advertising

Back in 2014, Abergavenny was awarded the prestigious Walkers are Welcome status for its great walking potential. Nestled between the Brecon Beacons National Park, the Wye Valley and the Blaenavon World Heritage site, and with the Black Mountains on its doorstep, the town is a mecca for walkers.

Three years on the group working to keep the status is due to be relaunched and will soon be organising regular guided walks from the town centre as well as producing leaflets to help people walk from the centre of town into the surrounding hills. The new team is being driven forward by keen local walkers with an interest in tourism. Tristan Blanchard, who has been integral in successfully developing Monmouth Walkers are Welcome  and who leads walks in the UK and beyond feels Abergavenny has a great potential to become a regional walking hub. He says:
“With not only stunning hills, beautiful valleys and an abundance of built and natural heritage with a few miles, Abergavenny is a perfect centre for walking holidays and, with some help, could soon establish itself as a hiking capital in Wales”.Another member of the team, Julie Townley, who runs the town’s Tourist Information Centre, says there are also opportunities for the town.

“With so much good quality accommodation, local independent shops and nationally renowned food, walkers can not only enjoy themselves in comfort but also contribute significantly to the businesses here”.

A meeting to firm up ideas and get things started takes place at the Kings Arms Hotel, Abergavenny, on Thursday 1st June, 6.30pm. Light refreshments will be served.
