At the HANNAH MLATEM salon we pride ourselves on excellent hair, organic products, a warm atmosphere – and always a giggle and friendly welcome.
We’re a family. Our clients become good friends and we pride ourselves on changing the perception of the dreaded salon visit that, unfortunately, many people experience. It began when Hannah, 33, had her own bad experience at a salon.
“I always loved everything to do with hair and used to watch totally transfixed when my mother used to cut hair. I loved how she used to make these women so happy, the laughter and chat they had and their hair always looked so good. I became fascinated with hair. So as a treat for my 17th birthday I went to a salon for my first ‘proper’ cut.
“What should have been the most exciting experience for me turned out absolutely awful. Apart from one of the stylists telling me I should cut off my waist length, curly red hair to a bob – it was hacked, dried frizzy and I left quietly, secretly crying all the way home. That was my last salon visit for about ten years.”
Hannah, who left a journalism career after ten years to follow her love for hair, began cutting her own hair because no one seemed to know how to cut her curls.
“I’d always end up with the Christmas Tree look – a massive frizzy triangle!”
So began the seed of the ethos for her own salon. A salon where the stylists listen – really listen to what you want. No sense of intimidation, and somewhere that feels like a home from home.
“Our clients love the fact that we greet them at the door, shampoo and complete their service – to the cwtch at the end! We don’t have a reception area or someone who just cuts, before you’re passed onto someone who just colours. I ensure that my staff are highly skilled in all aspects of hairdressing. To give you the complete look and service. And to me that’s important.”
Hannah has handpicked and trained her team, Crickhowell girl Laura Tucker, 27, and Bethan Bennett, from Gilwern, 24, with a third currently being interviewed.
Laura and Bethan have just returned from one of the country’s best shaving academies with distinction – and a new cut throat shaver!
As well as the array of unisex hair services we also offer wedding styling, Kerastraight (a semi-permanent blow dry that lasts up to four months), Cut Throat Hot Towel Shaves, Barbering and Hannah’s Hair School which is currently offering Daddy Hair Care classes recently featured on ITV News.
