‘At our heart we hold the idea that, through being creative, people can find solutions to difficulties we face. At the same time we can also find sanctuary, away from our daily worries, and draw strength from our own creativity.’
Abergavenny Community Centre provides a welcoming, nurturing space where there are opportunities to participate in creative activities, or to run your own. Here’s a flavour of what’s on at the Centre:
Abergavenny Origami Club
Origami can be enjoyed by everyone –young or old, male or female. The club has a passion for sharing the ancient Japanese art of folding paper. The Club runs activities and events throughout the year, and they’re always ready and willing to show others how to make the Crane, for adding to the ‘1000 Cranes Project’ which the club is running with the Centre, to bring us longevity and good fortune.
Puppet Soup
Award-winning Puppet Soup is resident at the Centre. They’re an exciting young team who bring together traditional skills and modern techniques to create their unique story-telling performances. They research and develop their work here, and they make their puppets and sets on site too. Watch out for future workshops and breathtaking performances!
Friday Night Knitting Club
Fancy coming to a friendly craft group, at the end of the working week? We meet from 5-6.30pm, getting together to unwind, chat, share and be inspired by what people do. We’re open to people of all ages, abilities and all arts/crafts. Drop in.
In the future we hope to offer more creative outlets, from soap-making, tie dying, wood turning and candle making to photography and painting. There’s a Cuban dance class about to start, and the Abergavenny Light Opera Company hold their rehearsals at the Centre. World Dance Group have run sessions with us, and children and adults have been able to learn Taiko drumming.
If you would like to join in, or run your own activity, do pop in and see us, call, or drop us a line. www.facebook.com/abergavennycc, www.abergavennycc.org, 01873 856925.
