The chapel, a grade 2 listed building is situated in Abergavenny New Cemetery ( leaving Abergavenny by the Merthyr Road turn right immediately after crossing Llanfoist bridge) was originally opened in 1894, and used regularly until about 30 years ago when it was closed.
It was reopened approximately two years ago. A group of Friends of the Chapel was formed. The chapel was renamed “ Chapel of Peace “and the group began to clean up the inside of the building and bring it back to its former state, but there is much structural damage to the plasterwork and the roof which is scheduled for repair.
The building is open Monday to Friday and the Visitors Book shows how much the reopening of the chapel has meant to the many visitors, some of whom have come from afar and it is from their comments that the chapel’s name was taken.
Services are currently held at Christmas and Easter Sunday, and occasionally funerals, but people go there to find peace and to think quietly.
It is hoped that sufficient funds can be obtained to have electricity installed, but this seems to be a rather distant hope.
