Focus Magazines The local magazines for Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Brecon & Talgarth – Events, News and Advertising

How many of us find that we accumulate far too many belongings? Sometimes this becomes a serious problem in which people find they are unable to throw anything out until their possessions gradually take over their lives.

mindThe next event for the Friends of Brecon and District Mind addresses this widespread problem. Paul Hartley will talk about his Chuck Out Tuesdays project. He has lots of ideas, too, for helping you to declutter your life and to reduce stress.

Paul was with some friends, in 2009, when the conversation turned to the amount of clutter that can accumulate over the years and how it can be hard to sort and clear.

So began the Chuck Out Tuesdays project. Each week Paul and his friends committed themselves to a little bit of sorting by asking and answering the question ‘Do I really need this item?’ They gave anything unnecessary – at least anything that was of saleable quality – to local charity shops. Paul made his deliveries on Tuesdays – hence the project name – and, over the years, Oxfam, the Red Cross, St David’s Hospice Care, St Michael’s Hospice and Brecon Volunteer Bureau have all benefited.

‘As well as contributing to the income of local charities’, explains Paul, ‘giving brings with it a feel-good factor and a great sense of relief at regularly decluttering one’s life!’

During his talk Paul will embellish the story of Chuck Out Tuesdays and will offer some ideas and inspiration on the ‘decluttering’ theme.

The Friends support the work of Brecon and District Mind and raise awareness of mental health issues in and around Brecon, Crickhowell, Talgarth and Hay-on-Wye. It is open to all and holds talks, activities and fund-raising events.
