In the dark days of winter, in a time of slashed funding for the arts, cuts to education budgets, and shrinking opportunities for today’s youngsters to step into the world of classical music, Abergavenny Symphony Orchestra is putting on a free Children’s Concert, to give families a chance to get a taste of the riches that lie in wait to be discovered.

Pete Geraghty, chairman of the orchestra, said “A live performance from 50 people playing as one is an experience that can’t be replicated by listening to a recording.  Children will get a chance to see and hear close up, talk to the players, and even try out an instrument!”  The programme will range from classic favourites such as Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” to music from the film “Frozen”.  The concert will be conducted by up-and-coming Tianyi Lu, an assistant conductor to the Hallé Orchestra and BBC National Orchestra of Wales, who has been described by reviewers as “inspirational”, “energetic” and “charming”.The concert is from 4 – 5 pm on Sunday December 13th, in King Henry VIII School, Abergavenny and refreshments will be available from the the school’s PTCA before and after the performance. Children are welcome to come dressed as their favourite winter character. No booking is required, but turn up early to ensure a seat – doors open at 3:30 pm. Details of all ASO’s concerts and workshops can be found on the orchestra’s website at www.abergavennysymph.org.uk and on Facebook: “Abergavenny Symphony Orchestra”.Bethan Barlow
