My family and I love these lovely sweet, nutty slices. They are especially good to make over the festive period, either as small party bites, as a dinner party dessert or just for pure indulgence! They are very quick and easy to make which, during the busy festive season when we all have so much to do, can be a life saver.
Ingredients
- 1 packet of filo pastry sheets
- 500g chopped almonds, walnuts or mixed nuts
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 175g melted unsalted butter
For the syrup:
- 120g sugar
- 300g honey
- 250ml water
- 1 tsp lemon juice
For decoration
- Finely chopped pistachio nuts
Method
- Grease a rectangular baking dish
- Set oven to 160°c/140°c Fan/Gas Mark 3
- Take 5 or 6 filo sheets basting each sheet with the melted butter
- Spread half of the nut mixture over the pastry
- Repeat steps 3 and 4
- Top with another 5 basted filo sheets, brush the top sheet with plenty of melted butter and place in the oven for ¾ to 1 hour until golden brown and crisp
- Cut into desired size and cool
- Whilst the pastry is cooling make up the syrup by bringing all the ingredients except the lemon juice to a boil and simmer for approximately 20 minutes on a low heat without stirring. Take off the heat and stir in the lemon juice
- Gently pour over the pastry making sure you evenly cover the top.
- Allow to stand for at least 2 hours
- Decorate with some chopped pistachio nuts before serving
