More than 500 small businesses in Monmouthshire could qualify for rate relief of up to £1,500 thanks to a Welsh Government scheme administered by the county council.

Monmouthshire’s cabinet members agreed to implement the scheme – known as the Wales Retail Rate Relief – at their meeting on July 15th.

The relief is available to all occupied retail properties with a rateable value of £50,000 or less that operate mainly as retail premises to provide goods, services, food or drink for visiting members of the public.

The county council has sent application forms and guidance notes to the 500 or so businesses it believes are eligible.  The guidance notes give an indication of which enterprises are entitled to this relief.

Monmouthshire’s cabinet member with responsibility for finance, Councillor Phil Murphy said: “This scheme provides valuable assistance to businesses across the county and we would encourage as many of them as possible to apply.”

For further information and a copy of the application form email: counciltax@monmouthshire.gov.uk  or telephone 01633 644630 quoting a rate account reference number.
