Did you know there is a bowling green in Gilwern? No? Where is it? This is the common response when club members talk to people who live in or near Gilwern.
Well, your bowling green is located in the playing fields beside the car park off Common Road. And if you’re thinking that Bowls is a game for old people, think again.
One of the beauties of playing bowls is that you don’t need the physical attributes of a George North or Andy Murray, but that certainly doesn’t mean that even if you are that fit then bowls is not for you.
It is often the case that we get tarred with the unfortunate (but much needed) names of the games major sponsors i.e. The Co-operative Funeral Care who sponsored the World Indoor Bowls Championship until last year or Just Retirement; the current sponsors. Hardly names to inspire the youth of today to take up any sport let alone bowls.
We at Gilwern are looking to enrol new young members who will form their own junior section of the club, benefit from the social interaction with, and experience of the older members and generally have a good time. Mums and Dads, Aunts and Uncles feel free to come along as well, give the youngsters your support and help make Gilwern a family club where you can spend a few hours at your leisure.
The club year starts in earnest in April through to September (with a few social get togethers in the club house in the closed season) and practice day is on a Monday, ladies and men in the afternoon and evening but if enough members get together then they often play more or less whenever the mood takes them.
