Mike James of MJ Health and Fitness is raising money to help raise awareness of the Sepsis UK Charity following a personal experience with the illness.
On 24th January last year, Mike’s father became very ill after undergoing a prostate biopsy. He developed sepsis and, as a result, suffered a cardiac arrest. Thankfully Mike’s dad survived and his health continues to improve with the help of medical professionals, family and friends.
Sepsis is a common and potentially life-threatening condition which is triggered by infection, where the body’s immune system goes into overdrive, setting off a series of reactions including widespread inflammation, swelling and blood clotting. It accounts for 37,000 deaths annually in the UK. That’s more than bowel cancer and prostate cancer put together. This means that a person dies from Sepsis every 14 minutes.
To raise money and awareness of the condition, Mike will be cycling from Carbonne, (Midi-Pyrénées Region) in France to Monmouth Wales on April 27th, hoping to arrive in Monmouth on May 3rd. He’ll be one part of a great team of four friends, who will cycle 170 miles per day, including a finishing leg of 130 miles from Portsmouth to Monmouth.
Mike is very grateful for every donation as all funds raised by the challenge will support the work of UK Sepsis Trust and will make a huge difference to the charity, enabling them to raise awareness through educating the public and health professionals on early recognition and treatment.
