We know that whilst many people enjoy taking part in the festivities surrounding Halloween, there will also be members of the public who would prefer not to be disturbed. We’re asking all local residents to make sure they have fun, whilst acting responsibly and respecting the wishes of everyone in the community.
Trick or treat
If you would prefer not to have trick or treaters call at your door this year, then please display our pumpkin ‘no callers please’ sign (page 12 of the October Focus) or download from Gwent Police to print yourself: Download English Poster or Download Welsh Poster.
If you are planning to go out trick or treating this year, then please don’t call at houses where you see one of the signs on display. Here are some other tips:
- Only to go to houses where you or your friends know the people and know you are welcome
- Always go with an adult
- Don’t talk to strangers
- Stay safe and keep to areas that you know and are well lit. Do not take short cuts through gardens, alleyways or parks.
Act responsibly
You may also see some posters up in shops across the Gwent Police area saying that flour and eggs won’t be sold to anyone under the age of 18. If you’re out on Halloween trick or treating, act responsibly and don’t throw flour or eggs at houses or other people’s property. Officers will be patrolling making sure no-one is acting anti-socially. Eggs and flour are for baking, not trouble making!
If you feel unsafe
Don’t open the door to strangers. Use a spy hole, door chain or window that overlooks your front door to check who is there. If you aren’t expecting anyone, then don’t open the door.
If you are a Neighbourhood Watch member, let your co-ordinator know that you will be on your own at Halloween. If you are not a member, let a relative or neighbour know.
To report incidents of anti-social behaviour, please phone us on 101. In an emergency, dial 999.
