Cwmdu Eisteddfod was first held in 1916 in the Schoolroom in Cwmdu VP School and has been held annually ever since apart from a few years during WW2.
At the 1945 Eisteddfod the schoolroom was packed to overflowing and that year’s president, Lord Glanusk issued a challenge to the people of Cwmdu to build a Village Hall so that all could be seated. The Hall was completed in 1956 and has been the venue for the Eisteddfod ever since.
The competitions in the afternoon are for children aged 4 to 18 years and include recitation, original verse, prose, singing, both solo and choral, instrumental solo and group, folk dance and visual art.
Evening competitions are for adults: literary competitions include original poetry, limericks, short stories, essays submitted to the adjudicator before the Eisteddfod together with recitation at the Eisteddfod.
Champion recitation 1st prize is £80. Entries may be in English or Welsh.
Musical entries are for solo, duets, choirs and instrumental.
Champion solo 1st prize is £125. Choir 1st prize £125.
Cwmdu Eisteddfod is one of the very few remaining Eisteddfodau in South Powys and we would welcome your support.
Many people think that all the proceedings are conducted in Welsh but this is quite incorrect. All proceedings are conducted in English; the Literature Adjudicator is always bi-lingual but the Music Adjudicator need not be.
Competitors come from a huge distance, and some from much closer.
The Committee is hoping that Cwmdu Eisteddfod will continue each year and celebrate its 100th anniversary but we need the support of the public to ensure that this will happen. Can you please help us by competing/attending this year’s event on Saturday November 8th in Cwmdu Village Hall.
