When the sun shines, we reach for our sunglasses. Just make sure that when you put them on, you know they are protecting your eyes effectively, as well as making you look good!
Cheap sunglasses may look like a bargain, but often do not have full or proper UV protection. UV, or Ultraviolet light, is that portion of spectrum of invisible light below 286nm to 400nm, with the primary source of UV being the sun. Not having the right protection against UV light can lead to serious eye problems, including damage of the cornea, cataracts and solar retinitis to name a few.
Certain sunspecs could leave you seeing double or developing headaches. Consumer group Which? Tested a number of sunglasses bought from seven major retailers, with some shocking results. While 15 pairs failed basic UV tests, others labelled as good for driving, were found to be too dark for such use.
When you’re buying sunglasses, it’s important to invest in those with UV protection with lenses treated with clear UV absorbing dyes. Also look for a CE mark – mandatory on products for sale in the EU – and the British Standard number: 1836:2005
A great choice of sunglasses is the Ray Ban. In 1929 when the U.S Air Force issued a commission for sunglasses that would perform under the extreme conditions faced by pilots, the winning design came from Ray Ban. From that moment, a world renowned brand was born. Not only do Ray Ban shades look cool – often seen shading the eyes of movie stars and rock icons – the lenses are the result of more than 70 years of innovation and research, so are excellent in ensuring your eyes remain protected in the glare of the sun.
