Contrary to popular belief, lettuce is not that good for rabbits, and neither are carrots. Tell that to Bugs and Peter!
Lettuce, particularly iceberg, contains laudanum and can be harmful. Likewise, light-coloured lettuce contains little nutritional content. While some lettuces, like Romaine, are safe, you are better feeding your toothy pal with hay, grass, cabbage, sprouts and radish tops.
Carrots aren’t that good for rabbits either. These are high in natural sugars and can lead to obesity, so should be kept as an occasional treat.
For a balanced diet, rabbits should feast on 80% grass and hay, 15% leafy greens and 5% pellets*
Remember, though, never change your rabbit’s diet suddenly. This can trigger digestive upset. Take two weeks to make changes gradually.
