One of our trees will be targeted by the Yarn Bomb – which one?  The location is TOP secret!

On Mother’s Day (Sunday March 30th) Zimele UK will be decorating a tree with beautifully coloured squares of yarn.

People in Swayimane, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, and around Abergavenny have been busy knitting or crocheting. Overnight a team of ninja knitters will sew 1000 squares around a prominent tree in Abergavenny. You can be part of this amazing event!  There is still time to join in and make some squares- either knitted or crocheted in synthetic wool to 20 x 20cm. If crafting isn’t your thing, please make a dedication.

Zimele invites you to dedicate squares to those you admire and love, whether they are still with you or not. Each dedication costs £5 and you can make as many as you like.

Dedications will be displayed by the tree, in Zimele’s social media, and in Red Square display window. Businesses can get involved by sponsoring a strip of squares for £25. There are more details on the website www.zimelecommunity.org.uk or email info@zimele.org.uk.

After the project, Zimele will make blankets for charities like Macmillan for use by people undergoing treatment at Nevill Hall.

The Wool Croft, Abergavenny, is a generous supporter of this project. Zimele Fairtrade crafters in Swayimane have benefitted by being paid for their work.

The Close-Knit Community Tree, celebrating wonderful people, is part of Zimele’s link between Abergavenny and Swayimane through Wales for Africa Community Links, funded by the Welsh Government’s Wales for Africa programme.

Either join Zimele’s mailing list or follow the trail from St John’s Square (by Post Office) from 10.30 on 30th March. The Mayor, Cllr Woodhouse, will ‘open’ the tree at 11am.
