It’s a great time to leave the UK, when the Christmas decorations are taken down and life returns to normal, however the UK weather in January and February can be at its most extreme and it is usually a perfect time to getaway and escape the very coldest and bleakest part of our winter! Choosing a holiday is always a challenge, however if you are looking for sunshine then head South where you can look forward to some warmer climes and bluer skies. The Canary Islands are approximately 4 hours flying time from the UK and you can fly from most local airports.
There are 7 Canary Islands however the main 4 being Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura all with their own uniqueness, however all can offer a great variety of accommodations to suit all budgets. Many of the luxury hotels also have spa facilities allowing you to have some “pamper time” whilst you are away. Madeira is also an all- time favourite with a subtropical climate plus a wonderful combination of indigenous and imported plants which combine to produce gardens that are the envy of horticulturists from all over the world. Funchal the capital city boasts a lively marina and the streets are lined with flower sellers, old town houses, small shops and pavement cafes whilst the covered market if full of colour and bustle of island life. Madeira also offers some great walks with the islands amazing levada irrigation system spanning 2500 kilometres stretching from the north of the island to the south, easy to navigate paths run beside the gently sloping hills giving the slightly more energetic an opportunity to explore the island and enjoy the splendid countryside.
Of course a visit to Madeira wouldn’t be complete without an afternoon tea at Reid’s Palace which is known as not only a legendry hotel but a heavenly one too! For those who want to see a number of destinations whilst away, cruising is a great option. With many itineraries to choose from and from various ports, cruising is a great way to take the opportunity to wake up in a new destination every morning plus you can sail North or South depending on what you want to see. For those seeking a more active holiday, skiing is always an option, with magnificent snowy peaks, clear mountain air plus it’s not just about skiing, there are resorts that cater for walkers, exclusive spas, enjoy a horse drawn sleigh ride or of course there is snowboarding too – beat the winter blues in January and arrange to getaway!
