Focus Magazines The local magazines for Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Brecon & Talgarth – Events, News and Advertising
As you may remember from last month’s issue of the Focus, we had plans in the pipeline to create a confectionary delight constructed from gingerbread to give away as a prize to one lucky Focus reader.

Abergavenny Focus Lebkuchenhaus

Well, I’m happy to say the Gingerbread House – or Lebkuchenhaus, to give it its correct German name – is complete. If you’d like to see the house in all its glory, the lovely people at The Pot and Pineapple in Cross Street are house sitting for us and looking after it until we conduct our prize draw on Tuesday 18th December.

gingerbreadThe Lebkuchenhaus has been baked to a traditional German Recipe by Nana herself and was decorated by yours truly – there’s even a cat (see if you can spot him) called ‘Focus’ who has taken up residency. The house is entirely edible, right down to the glitter, and can be eaten immediately or kept out as a festive display. I understand that its shelf life spans quite a number of years, but what is done with it is entirely up to our lucky winner. For a truly Hansel and Gretel experience, though, biting pieces off the roof might appeal…

To be in with a chance of winning the Gingerbread House, all you need to do is complete an entry form before 18th December, and return it to the entries box, which you’ll find located at The Pot and Pineapple. Forms will be available in December’s issue of the Focus or from The Pot and Pineapple. Why not take the opportunity to have a browse while you’re there? They have a wonderful and tempting array of sweets to enjoy as well as some fabulous edible Christmas gift ideas!

When you return your entry form to the Pot and Pineapple, we’d also like to ask and encourage you to make a donation to our charity collection box at the same time. We are collecting donations throughout the month of December for a very worthwhile cause – The Heart Research Fund for Wales; a leading Welsh charity which supports the development of heart disease research as well as education and training of clinicians and researchers in Wales.

The Heart Research Fund for Wales has supported several recent projects including:

  • A clinical trial investigating the use of an advanced pacemaker system in heart failure patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery
  • An internationally leading heart valve surgery registry
  • A study developing a simple new device to investigate how healthy our arteries are.

The fund has also supported students to attend national and international conferences to present their original research as well as supporting Welsh specialist nurses to attend training courses and state of the art cardiac meetings.
