Emma from Bookish in Crickhowell gives us an insight into what’s good to read this month.

The Hedgerow HandbookIf there’s one distinctive feature of the British countryside, it has to be the hedgerow. In fact, hedgerows are such an established part of our landscape that sometimes we take them for granted. But take a closer look, and the diversity and variety of plant species that form them is little short of wondrous. And it is not only plant life that thrives in abundance in the hedgerow.
Adele Nozedar has produced a beautifully illustrated, easy to follow and informative book brimming with information on a huge selection of hedgerow plants and their culinary and medicinal uses. There are a wide selection of varied recipies to try out – A wonderful book for the summer holidays as children will love to forage for their own food and help rustle up a tasty lunch!
Adele has a few wild plant foraging rules:
“Never pull up a plant by its roots – always cut above the root with a knife”
“Leave plenty for the birds”
“Never pick plants of they are scarce in a certain area”
“Never take too many plants from one patch”
“It’s important that we preserve and respect them”, she says.
