You may have been inspired by the recent Abergavenny Festival of Cycling to take to the saddle and go for a bit of a bike ride yourself. And why not? Cycling is great for fitness and can be enjoyed as a family on a sunny summer’s day. Why not pack a picnic and make a day of it? This month, in place of our usual walk, we’ve included a number of bike rides for varying abilities and fitness levels. Below you will find a description, length of route as well as a route map. We have also provided handy website addresses for you for more detailed maps and descriptions of routes. Happy cycling!


Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, Fourteen Locks to Cwmbran

Level: Easy
Distance: 6 miles each way
Start: Fourteen Locks Visitor Centre
Finish: Cwmbran
Notes: This is a traffic-free route along the Monmouthsire and Brecon Canal, which celebrates its 200th year anniversary this year.

Llanthoney Forestry Route

Level: Medium
Distance: 9.6 miles (circular)
Start: Pandy Inn
Finish: Park Hotel, Pandy
Notes: This ride comprises more of an uphill climb, but takes in magnificent views over Cwmyoy. While this may be more suitable for those with a good level of fitness, remember: what goes up, must come down!

Llanfoist to Clydach Gorge

Level: Medium to Difficult
Distance: 5 miles each way
Start: Llanfoist
Finish: Clydach Gorge
Notes: This is a long steady climb, taking in a section on public roads with a very steep climb at the end.
