The 2013 Monmouthshire Walking Festival takes place this month from Friday 18th to Sunday 27th October. The festival will be offering walks covering all corners of Monmouthshire that showcase the best walking the county has to offer. There are numerous guided walks for all types of walker and the full programme can be viewed at www.walkinginmonmouthshire.org.
Around Abergavenny walks include a “Llan-tastic” walk which covers three parishes and includes a visit to a rare listed 18th century cider house. Alternatively walkers can enjoy a tour of Strawberry Cottage wood, owned by Gwent Wildlife Trust; as part of a walk which ventures up onto nearby Hatterrall Hill.
Wardens from the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority will be leading walks that show how the special part of Monmouthshire around Partrishow is being looked after and sharing the natural and industrial history of Blorenge.
For the adventurous there is a “challenge walk” in the Black Mountains, a lovely unspoilt part of Wales. It offers an opportunity to walk all of Monmouthshire’s official mountains and more over two days.

Further afield woodland secrets around the secluded Wentwood reservoir and plant folklore and local history around Mitchell Troy can be discovered. Or walkers can take in the Wye Valley and enjoy a ramble around Redbrook or venture through “bandit country” in the Trothy valley, an area fought over for millennia.
To round off the festival there is a Hallowe’en walk which will feature the rich folklore of ghosts, apparitions and unearthly phenomena around the Clydach Gorge.
