This year marks two hundred years since the opening of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal with many events scheduled to take place to celebrate this special anniversary.
The Mon & Brec Canal was completed in 1812 and was created as a link between Brecon and Newport and the Severn Estuary. It was conceived as an industrial corridor for the transportation of iron and coal. By the 1930’s, however, the canal had fallen into disuse but has been gradually restored over the years by the British Waterways board with the support of numerous other organisations.
Nowadays the canal is enjoyed for its rural character and tranquillity and is used for recreational activities including canoeing, fishing, walks along the towpath as well as canal boat holidays. There are fabulous views to be enjoyed along its route and you may even glimpse a kingfisher or two darting in and out of the water, as the canal is a favourite breeding spot for this particular species of bird.
We are extremely lucky to have the Mon & Brec canal on our doorstep, and with the events organised to celebrate its 200 year anniversary, there’s plenty of reason to go and spend some time in its company.

20th-30th July:
Canal Anniversary Exhibition – An exhibition of canal related documents, images and exhibits at Theatr Brycheiniog
29th & 30th July:
Beer Festival at the Coach and Horses, Llangynidr. Outside bar, over 20 real ales available over the weekend, BBQ, hog road and entertainment both on and off the canal.
