Once there was a big-nosed fighting giant who ate any iron, metal or bronze he could find. This was a problem for the blacksmiths in the nearby villages. They were rapidly running out of metal.
One day in Portmeirion some blacksmiths were talking.
“We must get rid of this giant. He’s putting us out of business and terrorising the town!” So one brave blacksmith volunteered to go and talk to him.
The Blacksmith strolled to a field of tall grass and used some magic so that whoever ate the grass would have three things – kindness, helpfulness and friendship. Then he walked to the Giant’s deep dark cave and rang the doorbell.
“WHAT DO YOU WANT?” the Giant shouted.
“I’d like to tell you about a new type of metal” the Blacksmith replied.
“Come in, come in,” said the Giant. The Blacksmith told the Giant to follow him. So the Giant went with the Blacksmith and ate the grass. After a fizz and a bang he became kind, helpful and friendly.
“Come with me,” said the Blacksmith. ”Could you put sand by our sea?”
So the Giant used his big nose to smell out rocks from the forest. Then he crushed them with his strength and sprinkled them by the sea creating a golden beach. In return the villagers of Portmeirion made a statue of the giant holding a boulder which is still there today….and so is the golden beach!
