It has been a busy start to the Autumn, with Abergavenny holding the Food Festival and the Monmouth and Usk Shows. All appeared to go without a hitch and I was pleased to see the involvement from our Neighbourhood Team at these events.
I recently received some negative feedback with regards to how we use our Community Support Officers and specifically their deployment at Schools and Community based events. A major part of the CSO role is about community engagement and support which is why they attend such events. We will continue to support these worthwhile ventures to promote cohesion within the community and therefore forging links to assist in combating issues.
This support has been particularly beneficial in the Maesygwartha area where traffic disruption is ongoing along the A465. There is a healthy dialogue between the road builders, Costains, Cllr Hill and the Neighbourhood Team which is helping to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum and the local residents are informed of closures in advance.
I also attended a meeting earlier in the month with regards Abergavenny Road in Usk. The Community Speed Watch (CSW) Team presented issues to the County Council who have assured the CSW that support from the Council is forthcoming and the improvements will be handled by Council Engineers. Prevention is better than cure.
Rural burglaries have reduced in recent months, however, can I remind you to be vigilant and secure your sheds and outbuildings and remove farm equipment from fields where possible. Three youths and an adult were arrested after a burglary at the E-Cigarette Shop in Abergavenny. These persons are now being dealt with by the Courts. They were arrested within a day and property was recovered. A top team effort!
The nights are drawing in, so can I remind you to look to leave a light on in your homes if you are venturing out and perhaps the radio as well. Burglaries are very low within Monmouthshire, but anything you can do to deter opportunistic crime is always a benefit. If you would like any further crime prevention advice, ask a Community Support Officer for some advice or even a survey!
