The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut
Did you know? There’s no age limit on a library card – our youngest ever member was only a day old when she got her Powys Library Card! Of course, she did have a little help signing up…
Brecon Library aims to be an inclusive, child-friendly space for you and your baby to explore. Research shows that when we read to children (especially those under five), their brain cells quite literally light up, with existing links between cells strengthened and new links formed – all helping with essential brain development*. Reading aloud connects us — reader and listener. When we read to children, we’re telling them: You are important. This time is for you.
Brecon Library runs a weekly Storytime, every Tuesday from 11am. With support from volunteers and Mudiad Meithrin (a voluntary organisation aiming to give every young child in Wales the opportunity to benefit from services and experiences in the Welsh medium). Thanks to that support, a Welsh language Storytime has been added – on the third Tuesday of the month. Whichever day you can come, we’d love for you to join us!
Libraries offer a great financial return too – with free books for all ages, from high contrast board books for new-borns & babies (small enough for little fingers, yet strong enough to withstand a few bumps and the odd nibble!), to pictures books to suit every type of toddler
Powys Libraries also supports the ‘The Incredible Years’ Parenting Programme. Grownups can borrow any of the three books associated with the course – they’re great for dipping into as and when needed – easy to understand, practical guides on how to promote your child’s physical, social, emotional and language development, as well as how to manage difficult behaviours in children (or as we’ve heard them called – ‘threenagers’!).
Finally, Brecon Library is also looking for volunteers to help with new and existing children’s activities – and we’d love to hear from you! Get in touch with us on brecon.library@powys.gov.uk, or pop into the Library to have a chat about volunteering!
